Covid 19 Lash Care – Safe at Home Eyelash Extension Removal

LASH CARE + SAFE AT HOME EYELASH EXTENSION REMOVAL

Maintaining your eyelash extensions at home is just as important as your your appointments with me. Many of my clients are asking what to do if they don’t have access to their fairy lashmom because of Covid-19.

You have no idea how sad it makes me to do this post, but it is necessary.

Today I would like to talk about some steps you can take to nurture your eyelash extensions and natural lashes, during this difficult time.

PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT

If you were in for a lash fill the few weeks before March 23, 2020. Your lashes are still on the full side. You can protect your lashes by avoiding:

Oil or glycerin based products which can include: Cleansers, Moisturizers, Makeup removers etc.
Waterproof mascara and waterproof eyeliner.
Go lightly with eye shadow and concealer.
Clean lashes are happy lashes! Continue to bath your eyelashes every night, this is so important.

NATURAL LASH SHEDDING and GROWTH CYCLE

It’s been a few weeks since your last lash appointment.

Now you are noticing that your lashes are going through their natural shed and growth cycle. This cycle normal and healthy. Your natural eyelashes will shed taking the eyelash extension with them and now baby lashes are coming in.

REMOVING YOUR LASH EXTENSIONS AT HOME:

It’s goodbye for only a little while.

As your natural lashes and eyelash extensions begin to shed, your look will not appear as full as you are used to.

Because you are unable to come in and see me for your regular fills, you may be considering removing them until you can get back to me.

NOTE: In normal circumstance I do not recommend trying to remove your eyelash extensions by yourself at home, but these are unusual times for all of us.

Here are a few steps to follow if you wish to remove them at home:

STEP #1: EVALUATE YOUR LASHES

Do they appear moderately full?
- Hold out a little longer. Everyone’s eyelashes go through a cycle of natural shedding. If your set appears less than 30% of the original set, you are a better candidate for manual removal.

STEP #2: CHOOSE A NATURAL OIL FOR LASH EXTENSION REMOVAL

There is a reason that I tell you to only use makeup and face products that are oil free. Products containing oil or glycerin will break down the bond of the adhesive and cause premature shedding.

An important message regarding at home eyelash extension removal. The adhesive I use to adhere the extension to your natural lash is a strong bond adhesive. In normal circumstance I do not recommend trying to remove your eyelash extensions by yourself at home, but these are unusual times for all of us.

I DO NOT recommend that you use any kind of removal gel or other products on yourself. This can be very dangerous.

My best recommendation during this time for lash extensions that are coming to the end of their life-span, is:

Apply Oil or Castor Oil, to your fingertips. With your fingers, apply the oil to the lash line with a gentle massage in a circular motion. You can also apply a small of amount of the oil to one of your disposable mascara wands and gently brush through your lashes for deeper saturation.
- Other safe oils you can try: Coconut Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil.
Let the oil sit on your lashes for 3-5 minutes and then wash off. You can do this several days in a row. After 3-5 minutes bath your lashes , rinse with warm water and pat try.
PLEASE NOTE: This will help to break down the adhesive and help the lash extensions to fall before the natural lash sheds. With that said don’t expect this to work overnight.
DO NOT yank, pull, twist, rub or force the extension off of the natural lash. This will damage the natural integrity of your lash or remove your natural lash completely, prematurely.

KEEP YOUR NATURAL LASHES HAPPY!

After your at home eyelash extension removal, you for sure will want to keep your natural lashes clean and healthy.

A few things to consider when keeping your natural lashes happy are:

Avoid pulling, tugging, twisting and/or rubbing.
When wearing makeup during the day, be sure to clean your face and lashes every night before bed.
If you are considering strip lashes:
- NEVER sleep in them. Remove them each night before bed.
- NEVER apply strip lash adhesive to your natural lashes.
- The removal of false strip eyelashes is tricky. Do not attempt pull the strip lashes off without makeup remover. If they are not removed properly, your natural eyelashes can be accidentally pulled out. Use a waterproof eye makeup remover to dissolve glue. Remove false strip lashes very slowly and gently.

My beautiful girls,

I have always treasured the relationships that I have created with each and everyone of you.

There is a beauty that emerges from working with all of you, that is beyond lashes. It’s a community … it’s a friendship.

During this time of important and necessary separation, I am think about our relationships. Sincere connections with each of you. I miss doing lashes but more than that, I miss you.

Not being able to create beautiful lashes and seeing all of you is so hard. I have cried many tears and I can’t wait to reopen!!

At this time I do want to remind you of the strict safety, training and certification that sets me apart from so many others in this industry. I take great pride in my uncompromising standards and I am always committed to continuing to raise the bar in this industry.

I believe in beauty. Even though I am temporarily unable to see it in the eyes of you, my beloved clients and friends, I am watching the world bloom with beatiful acts of everyday kindness. You and I are joined together because of our love of lashes… but we are united by our human connections.

Eyelash Extension Fill – Why Do I Need One?

Eyelash Extensions are a popular way of enhancing your natural lashes.

The first thing you need to know about eyelash extensions is that they need to be maintained. Lash Fills are recommended every 3 weeks. If you wait longer than 3 weeks it will take longer to fill your lashes as there will be more natural lashes and many will be outgrown.

Growth Cycle

Your natural lashes have a natural growth cycle, just like hair. An individual Natural Lash sheds anywhere from 60-90 days and new natural lashes will grow in, to replace that shedded lash.

Each time a lash sheds, the extension falls with the natural lash it is attached to.

Regular Lash Fills will ensure that your lashes always look their best.

What is an Eyelash Extension Fill?

An Eyelash Extension fill is where I place new eyelash extensions on your new natural lashes and I remove any outgrown eyelash extensions replacing them with new eyelash extensions.

At your fill I am rebalancing the lashes, checking your lash health and making your lashes look full again or even fuller. This is an awesome time to discuss going longer or shorter as well.

I love Fills because we can play with your look and it is a time for me to express my creativity and artistry. PLUS you get to have a lash nap!!

Lash extensions are applied to only one natural lash. The Lash Extension should never touch your skin and there should always be a safe distance between your lash extension and your eyelid.

You do not want a technician who places lash adhesive on your skin as this will cause irritations.
A Certified Lash Artist will use only a tiny amount of adhesive and you should not be able to see the adhesive.
For New Sets and Eyelash Extension Fills always Choose a Certified Lash Technician

You will an need Eyelash Extension Fill because your natural eyelashes continue to grow and shed.

A lot of people don’t know that even with Eyelash Extensions your natural eyelashes continue to grow, move and shed. When your natural lash sheds the extension that I have applied to that lash will fall out with your natural lash. When you have eyelash extensions you will find a natural lash attached to the fallen or shed eyelash. That’s good! It means your eyelash extensions are staying on your natural lash until the lash sheds.

How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last?

This image of Eyelash Extensions after 1 week will help you visualize what happens with your natural lash and your Eyelash Extension.

After 1 week, you might notice that your lashes seem to be getting longer.

Your natural lash continues to grow and the Eyelash Extension grows out with the natural lash.

We all want our Beautiful Eyelash Extensions to last as long as possible.

Factors that can influence how often you need an Eyelash Extension Fill:

At Home Care. Caring for your Eyelash Extensions is really very simple and will ensure that your Lash Extensions are Long Lasting.
Eyelash extensions that are not properly and safely applied will not last. Always Choose a Certified Lash Technician! This post will help: Eyelash Extensions are Falling Off.

After Week 2. You probably do not need an Eyelash Extension Fill yet.

With proper at home care and proper application your natural lashes are happy and continue to grow.

After two weeks your Eyelash Extensions and natural lashes are grown out a little more than Week 1.

Eyelash Extension Fill – I had another salon / artist do my lashes. Can you fill them?

I don’t fill other technicians work for many reasons.

If you are having bad retention with your current Lash Tech or Your Eyelash Extensions are Falling Out. There is nothing I can do to fix their work. We have to remove them and start with a new set.
You wanted to try Eyelash Extensions and you started with A Cheap Set of Eyelash Extensions. There is no way to put this politely. Not all lash technicians understand proper and safe application. I specialize in Proper and Safe Application, unfortunately I cannot fill a bad set of eyelash extensions. We have to remove them and start with a new set.

This is a good picture to understand what your extensions will start to look like after 4 weeks of growth. With that said, some clients lashes will grow faster or slower than others, it all depends on your own natural lash cycle.

An Eyelash Extension Fill is recommended at 3 weeks.

For classic eyelash extensions, I recommend you come in for a fill between 2-3 weeks.
Volume Eyelash Extensions should be filled 3 weeks.
Difference between Volume Eyelash Extensions and Classic Eyelash Extensions.

You don’t want to go so long between Eyelash Extensions Fills that your Extensions and Natural Lashes are outgrown. If you do wait 4 weeks or more between an Eyelash Extension Fill your lash extensions can start to bend or twist.

Outgrown Lashes can get messy and tangle up. Outgrown lashes are not attractive and can sometimes cause damage to your natural lashes because of the pulling weight.

Eyelash extensions damaging to natural lashes?

If Eyelash Extensions are applied properly, by a Certified Lash Technician, they will not damage your natural lashes.

If Eyelash Extensions are not applied properly they quite simply, will not last and you will experience damage to your natural lash.

Please! Research your lash professional, we are not all the same!

It is extremely important that you follow the recommended at home care. Improper at home care is a big contributor to natural lash damage.

Proper At Home Care is easy

Examples of Improper Home Aftercare:

Not washing your eyelash extensions properly and everyday, can causing a build-up of products and dirt, blocking hair follicles as well as other lash problems. If you do not wash your lashes daily they will shed prematurely and your natural lashes will not be as healthy as they could be.
Playing, petting or picking eyelash extensions.
Sleeping on your Eyelash Extensions.
Wearing waterproof products including: glittery eyeshadow, mascara and eyeliner can all contribute lash damage.
- All of these products are hard to remove from the extension base.
- Mascara and eyeliners can stick on to your natural lashes and eyelash extensions and are extremely hard to remove.
- Most clients who use these products have to aggressively try to clean their lashes which absolutely causes damage.

What does it mean if your eyelash extensions are falling out?

My clients do not experience bad retention or their eyelash extensions don’t just fall off.

The majority of my clients can’t even believe it is time for a fill when they come in.

I decided wanted to write this post, because I have alot of gals calling who have had their lashes done by another technician and they are having eyelashes fall out within days. This is NOT NORMAL!

It would be so upsetting to have your lashes done and they don’t last.

Seeing your extensions on your pillow or in the sink can definitely upset most clients.

Let’s take a look at some common causes for bad retention or why eyelash extensions would be falling out to quickly.

HOW LONG DO LASH EXTENSIONS LAST?

Eyelash extensions can last as long as the growth cycle of the natural lash. Extensions are attached to a natural lash and when the natural lash sheds the extension will go with that lash.

It is very important that you understand lash extensions are not permanent. We can’t defy nature.

If you are finding that your retention or your eyelash extensions are falling with no natural lash attached, the following information will be helpful.

Natural Shedding

Alot of people don’t realize that we actually shed our natural lashes. Shedding occurs when the natural lash has completed its life cycle. Several natural lashes will reach the final stage at the same time and they will all shed as a group.

When you shed a Lash Extension and there is a Natural Lash attached, this is normal.

EYELASH SHEDDING

Each eye naturally can shed between 2 – 3 lashes per day. That’s why I recommend lash fills every 3 weeks to keep your lashes looking their best and fullest.

TRIVIA: your eyes do not shed the same. One eye can shed more than the other and that is normal.

THE SEASON

You will hear Lash Technicians talk about “the” fall shed, “the” spring shed. I never believed in this theory when I first started, but as an experienced Lash Artist, I can tell you, this is a thing.

The good thing, it doesn’t last long.

EXAMINE YOUR LASHES

We know that natural lashes naturally shed every day. Before eyelash extensions, we don’t usually notice when a natural lash falls. We do notice when a lash extension is attached to a natural lash because it is more obvious. So get up close and personal with that lash on your pillow or in your sink.

If you can see the 1 single natural lash attached to an extension, it is a natural part of the cycle.

If a few extensions fall without a natural lash attached, one of the areas below could be the reason.

Proper and Safe Application

Not all Lash Professionals are the same. Before you select your Lash Artist or Technician be sure to do your research.

Eyelash extensions that are not properly and safely applied will not last.

Lash Room Environment

When you come to see me you will see humidifiers, de-humidifiers etc.

The Lash Room enviornment is so important. You can have the most talented Lash Artist in the world and if her temperature and humidity in her room is not what it should be, she will have a problem applying the extensions and retention will also be a problem.

It is so important, if I can’t get the environment where it should be, I will cancel a full day of clients. It doesn’t happen often that I have to cancel appointments but temperature and humidity is key to proper application and safe application and why my eyelash extensions last as long as they do!

Adhesive

When I began my career I made a promise that I would only use the highest quality products available to me and eyelash adhesive is the #1 most important product other than the lashes of course.

There are a ton of eyelash extension adhesives on the market. The bonding life of adhesives range can from 1 week to 8 weeks.

My adhesive has the longest bonding life that I can find. If your technician choses to use an adhesive with a shorter life span, or a cheap adhesive, your lash set will be short lived as well.

Medical Conditions

These are a few medical conditions that can have a negative effect on the growth, shedding and overall health of your eyelashes. I am not a medical professional and cannot diagnose any medical condition. If you are concerned that you may be experiencing a medical condition, you should always consult your doctor.

Trichotillomania Tangle. Also called hair-pulling disorder.
Thyroid Condition. Eyelash loss can occur with both hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid).
Alopecia Areata – An autoimmune disorder that often results in unpredictable hair loss.
Blepharitis and Chemotherapy can also have a negative effect the growth, shedding and overall health of your lashes.

Diet

When you have a healthy balanced diet you will also have healthy lashes.

Contact with Oils

Any kind of oil is the one ingredient that is the #1 enemy to eyelash extensions.

This includes natural oils produced by the body and ingredients in products used on your face.

Oils will reduce retention of the eyelash extensions to the natural lash and cause your extensions to fall prematurely.

Hands Off! Avoid Petting or Touching

Try not touch your lashes. Lahses are not “this” delicate but some clients develop a habit of constantly touching their lashes throughout the day. Any oils on your fingers will transfer to your lashes.

Lash Growth Serums

I am a fan of Lash Serums because they condition your natural lashes and help your natural lashes to grow longer, stronger and thicker. Most Lash Serums are eyelash extension safe but always check with your professional before you add one to your beauty routine.

You only want to use the serum once a day because you will experience more shedding if your lash cycle is quickened. I will always tell you if I want you to decrease to every 2nd day at your fill.

Mascara

The #1 beauty product that I always recommend you avoid whether you have natural lashes or eyelash extensions is waterproof mascara. Waterproof mascara can damage your natural lashes.

Many mascaras contain ingredients that cause buildup on your lash and lash line.

When mascara is applied to eyelash extensions, the ingredients will break down the adhesive and weaken the bond. If you use mascara with eyelash extensions you will experience premature shedding, period.

Not Washing Your Lashes

It is essential to keep your lashes clean and wash them every day!

When lashes are not clean, the lash hair follicle can get clogged with dirt and debris. Clogged follicles cause lashes to shed and if left untreated can lead to stunting new lash growth.

How to Wash Your Lashes.

It’s not necessary to purchase expensive Lash Shampoos or cleansers. You can make your own Lash Shampoo, for pennies.

Sleeping and Rubbing your Eyes

If sleep with your face down in the pillow, expect some of your lashes to fall. Sleeping on your back is ideal.

Rubbing your eyes is a big no no. If you rub your eyes expect some of your lashes to fall.
